This is the saddest record ever made.
I was introduced to it by my good friend and fellow KXLU deejay Hoseh (Headspace, Thursdays 8-10pm) who said if I liked Becky Stark, I’d be into this.
This record is pretty fantastic. It’s got some gorgeous music with soft, sweeping female vocals, sung in Japanese, which are occasionally bombarded and overwhelmed with harsh noise. A wonderful contrast, beautifully executed. The songs are all covers of the ’70s Japanese folk singer Morita Doji, who eventually sued Slap Happy Humphrey and got this record pulled. You can still find it online, but it’ll probably never be reissued.
Whenever I play this record, I always mention that it’s the saddest record ever made. I don’t often go for soft music, but thankfully the screeching noise makes this record manly enough that I can feel secure in liking it.
Highly recommended.
