This past Saturday I deejayed at an ice rink while weirdos and “normal” people skated. Luckily it was under attended.
I hate deejaying in public, mainly because my idea of a good time is often not a crowd pleaser. That’s why I limit myself to once a year maximum. It’s been at least two years since the last terrible time. For some reason, I typically paint myself into a corner with the material I bring to the event and then I end up feeling bad that I’m subjecting people to my bad ideas. Maybe I’m just at the wrong party.
I was fascinated by the idea that I would be in control of the sound for a huge, cold space. I decided the only way to go would be a finely crafted megamix that incorporated a shit-ton of different environments and textures, so it would feel like you were skating through a typhoon or a blizzard. That was the theory anyway.
So I got drunk by myself and made a 30 minute sound collage that used up a good chunk of my field recording arsenal. I got a bunch of these recordings from Soundtransit, a fantastic field recording website I found recently. Really amazing stuff. Vietnamese bee swarms, Utah dust storm, Taiwan typhoons, etc. The next day, I soberly peeled back some layers and added the music.
Music selections by: Knifehandchop, Evolution Control Committee, Captain Ahab and Ethel Merman. I also used a bit of a track from the Exorcist II soundtrack as well as a variation of the ABC World News Tonight theme. Everything else is up to your imagination to figure out. Just be thankful that my lady friend scolded me for wanting to use a part of the root canal recording I found. I’ll save it for another day.
It’s not perfect, but not too shabby either. If the sound system were better at the ice rink, it would have made a better impression, perhaps. Let’s just say that some of the subtleties didn’t quite come through.
Better luck next year?
